Cytogenetics

Cytogenetic characterization of indigenous livestock breeds using various chromosome bandings and cataloguing the chromosome polymorphisms. Studies on genotoxic effects of chromosome anomalies on production and reproduction performance of various livestock. Effects of environment, physical and chemical agents like drugs, enzymes, hormones, pesticides, etc. as causative agents of chromosome anomalies will be investigated. Screening all the breeding males used in frozen semen banks and progeny testing or sire evaluation schemes in the field conditions for cytogenetic anomalies to make the livestock herds/farms Cytogenetically Clean. Undertake research work on genome manipulation by microsurgery and micro dissection of chromosomes.

Studies on chromosomes of spermatozoa, differentiation of X- and Y- carrying chromosomes (flow cytometry) by chromosome analysis, demonstration of H-Y antigen and DNA probes. Splitting and sexing of embryos, production of chimeras and identical twins from elite breeders. Research on cytogenetic basis for repeat breeding and poor fertility of crossbred animals and silent heat and seasonality in breeding of buffaloes.
